The surf in Arugam Bay is possibly the most well-known in Sri Lanka. When the beaches in the south-west are under the monsoon, it attracts surfers with its mellow right-hand reefs and point breaks.
Anyone who has surfed in Sri Lanka has undoubtedly heard about Arugam Bay. It’s the crown gem of the island’s spectacular beach lineup. There’s something for everyone, with some spectacular right-hand point breakers and a variety of reefs and even barrels a little farther out of town. In recent years, the die-hard surf audience has been diluted by beach lovers and beginning surfers, resulting in a wider selection of hotels and a significantly larger lineup.
But don’t let that dissuade you; there are still plenty of waves to be had. Surf Point (also known as Primary Point) is the main attraction, with fast and slow parts that may occasionally make beautiful, hollow rides right in the heart of town. To the north, the shoreline twisted its way through coconut plantations to Whiskey Point, a beginner-friendly beach. The wild and distant point breaks of Okanda, to the south, are where the people clear away.
